Gambit and Fluent Tutorials

Below you can find tutorials to the Gambit CAD and grid generation software and the Fluent CFD solver and post-processor.

Note that you should use the on-line software manuals (don't print them out - they are large). Find the Fluent manual by clicking on 'Help' in the upper right corner in Fluent. Then click on 'More Documentation' and 'Users Guide' in HTML-format (in your web-browser). Click on 'Index' in the upper right corner to search through an index. Sometimes the web browser doesn't open the manual correctly - then you can get the direct url to the manual in the terminal window where you started Fluent (after clicking as described above). This problem usually occurs when you already have your web-browser open when you click 'Help' in Fluent or Gambit. You can also try closing down your web-browser and click 'Help again'.

Find the manual for Gambit in a similar way.

A special note should be made regarding Gambit sometimes not wanting to start, complaining something similar to:
ERROR: IDENTIFIER "default_id" CURRENTLY OPEN
In that case Gambit probably crasched previously and left a lock file with the extension *.lok, in this case default_id.lok. Just remove that file, and Gambit will be able to start again.

Further information/tutorials

Here are some other useful documents (if you would like to have a look at more tutorials):

Import blade profiles in Gambit

A very short tutorial on how to import blade profiles into Gambit. Download the files that are needed (unpack using' tar -xvf STATOR.tar'. Read the file Stator_Information.pdf for information. These files correspond to a test case for heat transfer computations. Some useful Linux commands can be found here

If you have a good Internet connection at home, you should be able to run Gambit and Fluent from home, although the graphics will be slower. If you are running Windows, you need an Xservers such as Exceed. If you are running Linux, do the following:
ssh -l YOUR_CID remote1.student.chalmers.se (use your usual Linux password)
xlogo (to test that you can open a graphical window from remote1)
Then you should be able to run Gambit and Fluent.

There are also the following remote nodes:
remote2.student.chalmers.se
remote3.student.chalmers.se
remote4.student.chalmers.se
